Where Do We Come From? (Hebrews 11:1-3)

Sunday 05/07/2020

One of the biggest questions you can ask is: Where do I come from? What we think about the origins of the world and ourselves makes a huge difference to how we live.

Perhaps you believe that the material world we see is all that there is. All that exists is ultimately just a series of chemical reactions. There’s no God directing it all. Then there is no purpose for the universe or for your life. That’s a recipe for despair.

Maybe you believe that we can only really know the things we can see and measure. The very idea that God could reveal Himself is supernatural, so it’s out of the question. So, the Bible takes second place to science.

Or maybe you believe that everything has to be explainable by the laws that we observe in the operation of the universe. So, whatever you believe about God, you don’t expect Him to intervene in the world or to act in response to prayer.

Those are very reasonable ways of understanding the world. But this scientific materialistic worldview cannot explain realities we recognise about the world we live in like our inbuilt senses of beauty and justice. Science cannot explain all of our human experience when it excludes faith.

So, what does faith tell us about where we come from? And how does that give us meaning?

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” (Hebrews 1:1-3).

Faith understands that the universe was formed from nothing at God’s command (v3), so we can be assured of what we do not see (v1).

So, what difference does it make to live by faith, trusting what God says about where we come from?
